“DIARY OF A WINNER”

CHARLEY HALL

FENWAY'S FIRST TEAM
Charley Hall and the Sox get back at the Nationals

April 25, 1912 ... The Nats fought like thoroughbreds today, but the Red Sox won because of the splendid pitching by Charley Hall, who had already won two games this season in relief.  Hall allowed but four scattered hits.  The  Boston Speed Boys won by a score of 4 to 1. The game was full of sensational features with Hall pitching a masterly game.

Harry Hooper got into the limelight with a nice triple over Germany Schaefer's head, scoring two men in the sixth inning and seemingly putting the game on ice.

Duffy Lewis laced out a nice double during the game but it was nothing compared to his remarkable fielding. He made seven putouts and had one assist. The assist came when he threw the ball from deep left field on a dead line to Heinie Wagner, who nailed Clyde Milan at second base trying to stretch his single. He made several clever running catches and in the eighth inning, he brought the crowd to their feet with an old-fashioned circus catch. Henry hit the ball on a line and Lewis went for it up the bank, but fell and while tumbling, managed to spear the ball with one hand.

Hugh Bradley played a great game at first base, taking care of several poor throws, and Les Nunamaker caught a superb game and nipped a man trying to steal second. Tom Hughes was on the mound for Washington and pitched a workmanlike game. He pitched with excellent judgment, but the home team could not be denied. Kid Foster again played another great ballgame as did Milan, but it was Hall who would always put away a batter ,when a safe drive would do some damage.

Washington broke the ice in the third inning of a scoreless game when catcher John Henry started it with a pass and went to third when on Hughes singled to right. Harry Hooper made a bad throw that Hall intercepted and caught Hughes trying for second. Danny Moeller worked a walk and Hall threw to the firstbaseman Hugh Bradley, trying to keep Moeller close, as he took off for second. Bradley threw it down to Heinie Wagner, which allowed Henry to score, as Moeller turned around and went back to first. That made it 1 to 0 and would be the only run that was scored by the Nats in the game.

The Red Sox tied up the game in the bottom of the third. Les Nunamaker opened with a single and Hall sacrificed him to second. Yerkes then scored Nunamaker with a nice double to left tying up the game.

In the fifth inning the Red Sox took the lead when Hall led off and was hit by a pitch. Hooper sacrificed him to second and then Hughes passed Tris Speaker. Hugh Bradley hit a high fly ball to right that Moeller dropped, allowing Hall to score the Red Sox second run.

Hall got Washington in order in the sixth inning and in the bottom half of the inning the Red Sox scored two more runs. With two outs, Nunamaker and Hall singled. Then Hooper drove the ball over Germany Schaefer's head for a triple, that scored both the runners. That made the score 4 to 1.

The ninth-inning was the most interesting of all. Moeller drew a pass and then Foster singled. Milan hit a sharp ground ball which was well played to second by Yerkes to force Foster. Schaefer popped out to second and manager Clarke Griffith tried to get under Hall's skin, but Charley pulled himself together and struck out Jack Flynn to end the game.
