... Joe Wood's spectacular victory over Walter Johnson led the
pitching achievements in the American League last week, and with 30 wins
to his credit and only four defeats, Wood seems practically certain to
give the major leagues a new record in pitching percentage. His mark of
.882 with Eddie Plank of the Athletics, his nearest rival, standing at
.828. Jack Coombs is third and then comes Charley Hall of the Red Sox,
Walter Johnson and Bob Groom of the Nationals, Ray Collins of the Sox and
Hugh Bedient in order. Buck O'Brien stands 17th in the league in winning
percentage. Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Joe Jackson are still number one,
two, three in the league's batting race. Both Cobb and Seaker have reached the
200 hit mark last week, with Cobb now having 206 and Speaker having 202.
Whatever lingering doubts and fears the Red Sox fans may have entertained
about their team landing the American League pennant were dissipated when Jake
Stahl and his team won five of their six games, making it ten straight,
including three in a row over their most ardent competitors in Washington. Four
of the five wins were accomplished after the hardest kind of scrapping, with
each game won by just a single run. |
