“DIARY OF A WINNER”

WORLD CHAMPS AGAIN
The Red Sox out-last the Browns

June 17, 1915 ... The Red Sox came out on top of the St. Louis Browns at Fenway, by a score of 11 to 10. They had scored seven runs before the Browns were able to score their first one in the top of the sixth inning.

Babe Ruth was on the mound for the Red Sox and the lefty was pitching a great game until the eighth-inning, when 12 men came to bat and the Browns scored seven runs.

Heavy rains prevented the morning game and the grounds were not in good condition an hour before the afternoon game was scheduled to start. But the ground crew used sawdust liberally on the base paths and around home plate and on the pitchers mound. The players were able to do fairly well, although the infield was slippery id spots and prevented the fielders from covering their usual amount of territory.

The Sox batters gave a magnificent exhibition of hitting and scored two runs in each of the first five innings. Larry Gardner was the headliner, driving out base hits his first four times at bat and counting in all the runs scored. Jimmy Austin had three singles for the Browns.

The Red Sox started by scoring two runs in the first inning on a pass to Heinie Wagner, a wild throw in trying to force him out of second, and a double against the left-field wall by Duffy Lewis. Then in the third inning the Sox scored another run on a triple by Gardner to right-center and a single by Pinch Thomas. Two more runs were added in the third inning on singles by Tris Speaker, Dick Hoblitzell, Hal Janvrin and Gardner. Two more runs came in the fifth on a pass to Janvrin, a single by Gardner and a base hit by Ruth, making the score 7 to 0.

The Browns finally got to Ruth in the sixth inning with one out, when Bert Shotton drew a pass and went to third on a single by Jimmy Austin. He scored on Whitey Pratt's ground ball to Heinie Wagner.

In the seventh inning the Red Sox got another pair of runs on a pass to Janvrin, a single by Gardner and a line drive by Ruth. But then the trouble started.

In the seventh Ruth's velocity slowed and he was also having trouble getting the ball over the plate. Shotton started off with a walk and Austin hit the ball to the left bank. Pratt singled, Walker walked and John Leary singled. With the bases loaded, Doc Lavan cleared the bases with a screeching line drive to the bank in left-center, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Hank Severeid.

Carl Mays came in to relieve Ruth and was met by Harry Hoch lining a base hit. Mays walked Shotton and Austin sent home the seventh run with a single to left, cutting the Boston lead down to one run, 9 to 8.

In the bottom of the inning however, with one out, Speaker reached first on a wild throw and then stole second. Lewis drew a pass and the two of them worked a double steal. With runners on second and third Janvrin came across with a single to center to score both of them putting the Sox up by three, 11 to 8.

In the ninth-inning Walker opened with a smashing single through short for the Browns and Walsh drove another hit to left. After Leary was thrown out at first, Lavan topped the ball in front of the plate. Both Mays and Pinch Thomas went after it. Thomas picked it up but dropped it. Mays failed to cover the the plate and both Walker and Walsh came home. Now the Sox lead was just one run. But Mays got Hank Severeid on a ground ball, and Gus Williams to hit a weak grounder to Hoblitzell to end the game.

Babe Ruth struck out 10 men, yet gave up five earned runs in the eighth-inning alone, after getting one out. Heinie Wagner gave way to Bill Rodgers after five innings and the young kid look good in the field.

The Red Sox have now won 15 of their last 19 game. The game postponed in the morning will be played as a doubleheader when St. Louis comes here on their next road trip.
