The Red Sox lose to Washington's Harry Harper
April 18, 1916
...
Harry Harper set back the Red Sox by a score of 4 to 2 at Fenway Park. Harper had the Sox eating out of his hands in all the innings except the eighth, in which the Champions really threatened. It was literally a pitchers' battle on a cold
raw grey day, between Harper and Ernie Shore.
Shore was hit hard early in the game and strengthened later when it was too late. Some loose fielding helped the visitors score a couple of runs late and that was the margin. The Sox managed only five hits, two of which came together in the eighth,
preventing a shutout. Only seven hits were registered against Shore, but one of them came in handy with a runner on third and two of the others with a man on second. Washington solely won the game on timely hitting., but an airtight Red Sox defense would have stopped them. |
