Ernie Shore dazzles the Tigers
May 25, 1916 ...
Ernie Shore pitched splendid ball against the Tigers, holding them to one
earned run, scored in the first inning of the game. Hughie Jennings used three pitchers in a vain effort to stop the Red Sox attack, which produced fourteen hits and had the game won
after the third inning. They hit Tigers starter, George Cunningham, three times for a run in the second inning and then bunched four more clean hits in the third inning for two runs which was just enough to win. With the bases filled, Bernie Boland came in and stopped the
proceedings, but the Sox later scored a run against him, and put up one more run late in the game. Detroit put up one run very quickly in the first inning, but the Sox were not slow in coming back and all afternoon played great ball.
Jack Barry had a field day at second base, figuring in three doubleplays, accepting all 12 chances, hit at him, in the field. His performance was the cleanest and snappiest seen in a Red Sox game for quite a while. Ernie Shore was steady all
afternoon, giving up eight singles scattered throughout six innings. The only clean hit was by Bobby Veach, that sent home Donie Bush with the Tigers' first inning run. |
