The Red Sox snatch a victory in Chicago
June 15, 1916 ...
The Red Sox unloaded four hits in the ninth inning, in Chicago, to come from behind and beat the White Sox 2 to 1. It was a great finish and Dutch Leonard, who really pitched a great game, made the hit that sent Hal Janvrin over with the winning run.
Reb Russell was on the mound and he had been getting hit easily all game. He was lucky the score was not higher, but a pair of great throws by Shano Collins and Happy Felsch had cut down runners at the plate.
But the ninth was a great one for the Red Sox. First up was Tilly Walker who smashed one down the left field line for a double. Larry Gardner sacrificed him to third base, and Hal Janvrin singled to center to score him with the tying run. Sam
Agnew, who had already delivered two hits, punched one to left, putting Janny on second. Dutch Leonard stroked one to center and Felsch made a great attempt to get Janny at the plate, but the Sox grabbed a 2 to 1 lead when he beat the throw. Dutch gave up a double in the ninth
but but all Joe Jackson could do was hit an easy fly ball for the final out of the game. Only 19 men faced Dutch in the first six innings, with only two hits. His control was perfect. |
