The Yankees spoil the Sox homecoming
June 20, 1916 ...
It was anything but a glorious homecoming for the Red Sox at Fenway Park after the game was lost to the Yankees by a 4 to 1 score. The Yankees went after Dutch Leonard with a lot of punch. He could not get the ball out of their reach and it was 3-0
when he got the early shower by Bill Carrigan. Ray Keating opposed Dutch on the mound for the Yankees and he was a rock for six innings, holding the Sox to just three hits. In the seventh it was Tilly Walker who put the Sox on the board by hitting the ball over it onto
Lansdowne Street. Tilly became the only Red Sox player to hit the ball over the left field fence now twice. The blow shook Keating because in the last two innings, the Red Sox had loaded both times. Duffy Lewis failed to deliver in the eighth and Hick Cady hit into a
game ending doubleplay in the ninth. Paddy Baumann was the star for the Yankees, collecting five hits. |
