Carl Mays too much for the Indians
July 26, 1916 ...
The World's Champions got going against Cleveland today, beating them 3 to 2. in an air-tight errorless game. Carl Mays was unbeatable in his duel with the lanky Fred Beebe.
The Red Sox took the lead in the second inning when Dick Hoblitzell came home after Everett Scott's fine hit to deep left field. Two innings later the Indians tied the score but Hobby stopped the rally with a fine play on Ben Chapman. Immediately
after that the Sox went in the lead to stay when Tilly Walker started the fifth inning with a hit to left and came home on Larry Gardner's double. After Scott sacrificed Gardner to third, Beebe unleashed a pitch over his catcher's head, allowing Gardner to score. The Indians
fought hard in the sixth to get back one run, but Carl Mays was dominant in the last three innings, only allowing one base runner.
Larry Gardner played a splendid game. Not only did he score the winning run on the wild pitch, but he was robbed of a hit in the second inning and in the ninth, secondbaseman Ivan Howard robbed him of a hit up the middle with a fine fielding play. |
