Carl Mays tames the Tigers
as the Red Sox climb into first place
July 30, 1916 ...
The Red Sox came back with a vengeance today in spite of heat more excessive than yesterday, and took down the Tigers, 9 to 3 and took advantage of the Brownies beating the Yankees, to take over first place. Today it was the Sox who took advantage of
tall Willie Mitchell, whose left handed flings bothered Boston batters very little and received some very poor infield support. The Champions laced out 13 hits, getting four runs in each of their big innings, while Carl Mays pitched fine ball throughout the contest, and received no
favors considering many of his pitches were over the plate an inch or two above the knee. Ty Cobb knocked out three hits and drove in two of his team's runs, but Larry Gardner and Duffy Lewis also had three hits for the Red Sox. |
