The Tigers give the Red Sox very little trouble
August 2, 1916 ...
The Red Sox had very little trouble taming the Tigers and made it four straight over Detroit, doing some fine hitting early in the day against right-hander Bernie Boland.
George Foster pitched a great game until the eighth inning when the Tigers scored two
runs on three of their seven hits. From the first inning until the eighth, Foster allowed only two singles, while the Sox bunched two runs in the second and three more in the third.
Hughie Jennings tried three pitchers. Against Boland the Sox combined three hits with as many passes for four runs. Off reliever George Cunningham, the Sox made three hits, one a double by Larry Gardner, putting over the Sox final score in the
third inning. The champions had men on base constantly, but were very shy on timely hitting. The defense behind Foster was remarkable, stopping potential rallies on numerous occasions. Tilly Walker made a great try for Sam Crawford's triple in the eighth. Pinch
Thomas made two fine running catches of foul flies close to the stands. Jack Barry played a great series, making 13 putouts, 22 assists and only one error. Ty Cobb failed to hit in his last ten trips against Sox pitching. |
