The Sox fail badly and the Browns win again
August 4, 1916 ...
Del Gainor hit a long fly over the left field fence in the second inning giving the Red Sox a short lead over Eddie Plank. It was a good start, but the Sox lapsed into as poor a ball game as they have played in months. Except for the home run, they
made only one other hit against the veteran hurler. In fact no other Red Sox runners made it past first base. The Browns easily won the game 6 to 1.
They gathered in five runs on nine hits and four passes from Babe Ruth, mixed in with a very poor defense by the Red Sox fielders. Ruth looked good at the start, but poor support in the pinches wrecked whatever advantage he had. The Browns quickly
put two runs across after Gainor's homer and then scored two more runs on a wild throw by Larry Gardner in the fourth inning and picked up more runs in the fifth and seventh innings. |
