The Red Sox take a beating from the White Sox
August 17, 1916 ...
The
Red Sox were trounced by the Chicago White Sox by a score of 7 to 0. It was one of those games the players would rather forget, and there was no chance to get back into the game after the first inning. Carl Mays was hammered by White Sox batters,
while Reb Russell had the Red Sox batters in the palm of his hand. By the fifth inning the White Sox had scored their seven runs.
In the first inning, John Collins opened the game with a double to left. Buck Weaver sacrificed, Eddie Collins tripled to right center, Joe Jackson doubled to left, and Happy Felsh made it 3-0 with a single to right. For the next three innings, Carl
Mays settled down to pitch one hit baseball, but four runs in the fifth inning sealed Boston's fate. Russell allowed only two Red Sox baserunners as far as second base and two doubleplays by the White Sox gave them a shutout. |
