“DIARY OF A WINNER”

NICK ALTROCK

BACK-TO-BACK WORLD SERIES CHAMPS
Red Sox and Senators draw to a tie

September 8, 1916 ... The ball game today was brought to a halt because of a thunderstorm in the seventh inning by umpire Ollie Chili.  Jim Shaw did some very fine pitching for the Nationals and likewise Ernie Shore was on top of his game.  Washington hustled through their half of the fifth inning because they wanted to save the gate money.  It was thundering before the game started and it rained and continued until the end when it poured.  There was a 12 minute delay in getting the game started and another 17 minute delay later on.

The rain did nothing to keep the clowns Nick Altrock and Sawyer from showing off their comedy routine.  Altrock, carrying a flashlight in one hand and a broom in the other, while Carl Sawyer with a lantern in one hand and a bat in the other both went to home plate to peek under the tarpaulin.  Then they indulged in imaginary ball playing to the crowd's delight.
