Dutch Leonard puzzles Griff's men

September 11, 1916 ... Dutch Leonard found a new way to beat other teams.  With his bat.  Jimmy Shaw started for the Nats and looked like a million dollars for five innings.  In the sixth it was Chick Shorten who got to him and helped put the Sox on the board by knocking in Dutch and Hal Janvrin.  Not to be outdone, Dutch put the game out of reach in the next inning with a double to right center scoring Duffy Lewis and Bill Carrigan.

The Nats tried hard to pull the game out of the fire in the sixth and seventh but to no avail.  Leonard proved to be a puzzle to the Washington hitters.

After the game manager Bill Carrigan announced his plans to retire at the end of the season.  After the announcement there was considerable talk about his successor.  The names of Jack Barry, Heinie Wagner and Dick Hoblitzell were all mentioned.
