RAY CALDWELL

THE BABE RUNS WILD ...
Washington fades away after the Babe homers

June 24, 1919 ... Manager Ed Barrow came back today with Ray Caldwell against Washington. Caldwell lasted only two innings in the game yesterday, but he was all right in his second start today and went through like an ace. The Red Sox won the game 5 to 2 as the Nationals got only six hits for their efforts against Caldwell's pitching.

Patsy Gharrity knocked out a double which drove in the only runs for Washington in the sixth inning of a scoreless game. Joe Judge had hit a hot grounder that was batted down by Stuffy McInnis at first. McInnis was able to save a double. Caldwell came over to cover, but did not get there in time. Kid Foster then dropped a Texas leaguer behind second base that allowed Judge to make it to third. Foster took second base when Walters let a pitch get away from him as Milan struck out. Then Gharrity doubled down the right-field line and the score was 2 to 0.

These runs looked big until Babe Ruth started a rally by the Red Sox in the seventh, by smashing a home run into the right-field bleachers and before the inning was over the Red Sox and tied up the game 2 to 2.

The Babe was laying for the first ball pitched and hit it square. It landed among the top seats of the right-field bleachers, close to the break between them and the $.25 seats. It was the only hit that Ruth got in his four at-bats, although he poked a liner at Ray Grover the secondbaseman, that nearly knock them over. Grover caught the ball, but it was hit so hard that it went through his glove and he was only able to knock it down. However he got up in time to make a play at first base.

Dick Robertson pitched a great game for Washington, up to the time Ruth connected with a home run, and after that he seemed to crumble. Doc Ayers was then rushed to the bullpen to warm up, but before he was ready to come in, the score was tied on a single to center by Roxy Walters. The base hit got by Clyde Milan and Walters was able to get down to second base, where he scored on Dave Shean's single to right.

Then in the eighth-inning the the Red Sox put it away. Harry Hooper led off with a single, which bounded over Ayers' head and shot out into centerfield. Hooper ran hard on Mike McNally's sacrifice down to Foster at third-base and was able to get the third himself as the Kid did not hurry to get back to third base and Hooper seeing this, turned on the speed. Shortstop George McBride saw what was going on and sprinted with Hooper over to the third-base bag, but was out of position to get the throw from Judge.

With Hooper on third and only one out, the infield had to move in. Amos Strunk hit a ground ball down to Judge, that he bobbled and Hooper came over with the go-ahead run. Two more runs were added on a single by McInnis, a hit batsman, a single by Everett Scott and a throw from the outfield that catcher Patsy Gharrity lost control of at the plate. When the dust settled the Sox put up three more runs on the board and now led the game 5 to 2. Caldwell got Washington in order in the ninth-inning to preserve the win.
