THE RED SOX SINK TO THE BOTTOM
Bill Wambsganss' walk-off
single in the
12th inning wins this game for the Red Sox
May 16, 1924
... Bill Wambsganss whipped off a 12th inning base
hit to land the Red Sox with a 4 to 3 win over the White Sox. The
fans fought off the rain and did not have much to cheer a bout at
first.
The White Sox chalked up three runs in the opening inning against
Alex Ferguson, but the ball game assumed a different aspect when the
Red Sox got busy in the fifth inning and banged out four straight
singles and a double after two were out against Dixie Leverette.
own 3-0, Wamby and Bobby Veach each singled. Joe Harris scored Wamby
with a base hit and Ike Boone singled home Veach. With the bases
loaded, Danny Clark followed with a two run double, to tie the score
at three apiece.
From that point until the 12th inning inning all the bats went quiet.
The finish then came quickly. Homer Ezzell, who had come in to run
for Ferguson in the ninth inning and stayed in the game at short, led
off with a single to left. Ira Flagstead bunted him over to second
and Wamby arched a base hit to left, his third of the game, scoring
Ezzell with the winning run. |
