DUD LEE

IN COMES QUINN ...
THE RED SOX SINK TO THE BOTTOM
The Sox come back from down five runs
to split the doubleheader with the Browns

July 11, 1924 ... After losing an 8-1 decision to the St. Louis Browns in the opening game of a doubleheader, the Red Sox came back and overcame a five-run handicap in the second game, and grabbed it away from the visitors, 7 to 6.

The first game was one-sided with Browns pitcher Ernie Wingard holding the Sox in check throughout the contest, while his mates hit Alex Ferguson for 13 hits and eight runs.

The windup game was a hectic one with 23 players getting to see action, including eight pitchers and seven pinch hitters. Jack Quinn started for the Sox was was taken out for a pinch hitter in the second inning. Then George Murray held down the fort until the ninth, when he was taken out. Oscar Fuhr pitched to one batter and then Curt Fullerton nailed it down by striking out the batter he faced.

Dudley Lee was the Sox offensive star, collecting four base hits, including two triples and three RBIs. Howie Shanks also knocked in two runs with a pinch hit double.

The game started in a dismal way for the Sox. Jack Quinn gave up two hits and issued three passes in the first two innings. Phil Todt and John Collins each also made errors and the Browns had a quick 5-0 lead.

But the Sox mounted their comeback right away in the second inning. They picked up a run when Ira Flagstead doubled off the wall and scored on the first of Dud Lee's four hits.

Another run was plated in the fourth inning when Phil Todt reached with a single and Steve O'Neill laced a hit into the left-centerfield gap. Todt scored but O'Neill was thrown out at second.

In the fifth inning, Dud Lee blasted his first triple to the centerfield fence and came home when Jack Tobin played the ball badly and overthrew his infielders.

Collins and Flagstead led off the sixth inning with base hits and Browns pitcher, Ray Kolp, was replaced by Hub Pruett. Shanks doubled to left and scored both the runners. Hub followed Kolp to the showers and handed the ball to Elam Vangilder. He hit the first batter he faced, Steve O'Neill, and Dud banged another single to center that scored Shanks, to tie the game.

Two innings later, Vangilder hit the leadoff batter, Ira Flagstead and then let him get to third when he tried to pick him off first and threw the ball away. Shanks hit a long fly to center and Flaggy easily jogged home with the go-ahead run. O'Neill next doubled to right and Bill Bayne now took over for the Brownies. Lee came through with his second triple and the Sox were up by two.

But in the ninth, the Browns rallied. With one out, Jacobson walked and Homer Ezzell caught a pop fly from Hank Severeid for out number two. Herschel Bennett pinch hit a single to center that scored Jacobson and cut the Sox lead to one run. Murray then hit pinch hitter Harry Rice with a pitch and that was the end of his day. Oscar Fuhr came in to try and nail things down but walked a batter to load the bases. Curt Fullerton now was called from the Sox bullpen and struck out Norm McMillan to put an end to the game.
