DANNY CLARK

IN COMES QUINN ...
THE RED SOX SINK TO THE BOTTOM
The Sox tie the game up in the ninth and win
in the 10th inning on Danny Clark's hit

July 24, 1924 ... The Red Sox engaged the Cleveland Indians in a free-for-all of a baseball game and when the dust finally settled, the Red Sox emerged as a 10 to 9 winner. It took 10 innings and 17 Red Sox ball players to win it. Thirty-one base hits were made for a total of 38 bases during the game.

Three times the Indians had the lead and the Sox grabbed back the advantage each time. And finally in the first extra frame, Danny Clark smacked a drive into right field with the bases loaded, for the walk-off victory.

Joe Shaute and the Sox Bill Piercy started the game. Piercy was slammed for 15 hits in less than six innings, before he gave way to George Murray. After having a pinch hitter take his at bat, Murray turned things over to Buster Ross, who allowed just three hits in his three innings of work. Curt Fullerton worked the last inning and got the win.

The Indians picked up a run in the second inning and pushed across another run in the fifth. Then the Red Sox got to work and before the smoke had cleared, they were ahead 4 to 2. With one man out, Steve O'Neill singled and Howie Shanks was walked. After Piercy popped up, Homer Ezzell singled sharply to left to bring home a run. Bill Wambsgnass lined a double to center to bring in another run and Bobby Veach cleared the bases with a single to left.

In the sixth inning, half a dozen Indians scored on two walks, four singles and two doubles, ending Piercy's afternoon. In the Sox half of the inning they picked up two more runs. Ike Boone singled but was forced at second by Ira Flagstead. O'Neill walked and Shanks banged a double off the wall to score Flagstead. Phil Todt batted for Murray and walked to fill the bases. Clark hit for Ezzell and grounded to George Burns at first, allowing O'Neill to make it home.

With the tribe up 8 to 6, no more runs were scored until the ninth inning. Then the Sox pulled into a tie once more. With one gone, Clark drew a free pass and Wamby flew out. Bobby Veach grounded to Riggs Stephenson, who failed to get Clark at second base. Joe Harris lined a single to center that scored Clark and Boone doubled home Veach with the tying run.

So the game then moved into overtime and the Indians went ahead. Shanks fumbled Burns' hot grounder with one down and the next two batters drew passes to load the bases. George Uhle next lined a stinger to left that scored Burns.

Down a run now in the bottom of the 10th, Flagstead led off with a free pass. O'Neill popped up and Shanks lined a base hit to right, that moved Flaggy to third. Val Picinich batted for Fullerton and also walked to fill the bases. Danny Clark then drove a clean single into right and the game ended abruptly with a 10-9 Red Sox victory.
