IRA FLAGSTEAD |
IN COMES QUINN ...
THE RED SOX SINK TO THE BOTTOM
Flagstead and Wamby bring
the Sox
home in the 11th inning
August 25, 1924 ...
Ira Flagstead's screeching double to the terrace in left center, and
a single by Bill Wambsgnass in the 11th inning, provided a 4 to 3
victory for the Red Sox over the Detroit Tigers.
In a battle from start to finish, the Sox grabbed a 3-0 lead in the
first inning, but never really threatened to score again against Ken
Holloway, who relieved Rip Collins. In the first, Flagstead hit a
single off Collins and Wamby sacrificed him to second. Ike Boone and
Bobby Veach each drew a free pass and John Collins looped a base hit
over the shortstop to score Flagstead. Danny Clark next hit another
looper that dropped into center that scored Boone. Val Picinich's
sacrifice fly scored Veach with the final run.
The Tigers scored on Red Sox errors in two instances and scored one
run each, in three of the first five innings, therefore working the
game into a 3-3 tie.
Then in the 11th, Flagstead laced a ball off the fence in left
center. Wambsgnass, after two missed attempts to bunt Ira over, shot
a single into left. Flagstead was at first held up at third, but
leftfielder Heine Manush juggled the ball, allowing him to come home
with the game winner. |
