JACK ROTHROCK |
The Red Sox score three in
the ninth
and walk-off with a 3 to 2 victory
against the Yankees
April 30, 1927
... Urban Shocker shutout the Red Sox for eight
innings and went into the bottom of the ninth with a 2-0 lead, that
was shaved away from the fine game pitched by Hal Wiltse.
The Sox then blasted Shocker off the mound with a furious rally that
left the Fenway fans in hysterics. The crowd of 15,000 had turned out
to see the "Babe" hit home runs, but instead were treated to an
incredible comeback by the home town boys.
Ira Flagstead opened the ninth with a blow to left field. "Baby Doll"
Jacobsen next bounced a single off the third base bag. Phil Todt
tried to sacrifice the men up by bouncing a ball back to Shocker, who
threw the ball away, attempting to get Flaggy at third. With the
bases loaded, Jack Rothrock came up as a pinch hitter and slammed a
double down the right field line that tied the score.
Shocker was sent packing with Wilcy Moore taking the mound for the
Yanks. He intentionally walked Grover Hartley to again load the bases
and struck out Wiltse. Pee Wee Wanniger now sent a grounder to
secondbaseman Tony Lazzeri who got Todt at home for out number two.
It was up to Fred Haney to not let the game go into overtime and the
count went all the way up to three and two. Wilcy couldn't find the
plate on the deciding pitch and Haney walked to first while Rothrock
trotted home with the winning Red Sox run, 3 to 2. |
