“DIARY OF A WINNER”

DENNY MYERS

#1 COLLEGE TEAM IN THE EAST

August 27, 1942 ... Coach Denny Myers inaugurated the new football season, telling the 66 hopefuls not to grow too optimistic and that last year's successful season had no bearing on what would happen this year.  This note of warning could be attributed to the heavy toll taken of the Eagles' personnel through various channels.  Ten members of last year's team graduated and 13 joined the various branches of the service.  The coach thinks he has a good first team but is concerned with the lack of experience on his bench which includes many freshmen.  Eddie Doherty and Wally Boudreau were slated to work at quarterback, with co-captain Mike Holovak at right halfback, Mickey Connolly at fullback and Carl Lucas to alternate in and out.  The offensive line will be anchored by co-captain Fred Naumetz at center, with Gil Bouley and Angelo Sisti at tackle, and Pasquale Darone and Rocco Canale at guard position.  The line will be backed up by Al Fiorentino and Mario Gianelli.  The coach is relying on Don Currivan and Charley Furbush as his ends with good varsity experience on them.   The squad went through a 5 1/2 hour session to start the season workouts.

September 12, 1942 ... Co-captain Fred Naumetz announced today his decision to enlist in the class V-7 of the Naval Reserve.

September 16, 1942 ... Coach Myers had reserve backs Wally Boudreau (quarterback) and Bernie Lanoue (halfback) working with the first string squad at the practice session today.  The coach declared that the scrimmage was the most successful so far this season and had confidence that his "t" formation offense is ready to go.

September 18, 1942 ... The Chicago Bears and the All-Army team arrived at the practice field today to work out in preperation for their exhibition game at Fenway Park. 1200 students were on hand to get a peak at former B.C. grid stars, Charlie O'Rourke, Monk Maznicki Butch Kissell, and former Holy Cross foe Bill Osmanski, who all now play for the Bears.  Fred Naumetz and other members of the squad were on hand to welcome back their former teammates before practice.  The Army squad arrived for the afternoon practice in Army transport trucks, in contrast to the glistening cabs that transported the Chicago Bears to the field.  Besides the former B.C. players, the most sought after player was the Bears' quarterback, Sid Luckman.  O'Rourke will start the exhibition game in place of Luckman who is injured.

September 21, 1942 ... Coach Myers put his B.C. team through a vigorous two hour workout concentrating on polishing up his passing attack under fire.  Myers split the squad into four units with two sets of elevens at opposite ends of the field. A particular bright spot was the passing of Bill Boyce who chucked the ball with the craftiness and capability of the other veteran QBs.

September 24, 1942 ... The B.C. team now has decent training quarters as compared to previous years when the teams dressed in the basement of the main building among cafeteria cartons, lavatories and ticket offices.  The college acquired the Louis K. Liggett estate over the past year, which is across the street from the athletic field.  The stable has been renovated to be an athletic training facility and offices.

October 1, 1942 ... The football squad went through its final preparations for their first game against West Virginia.  The drills were restricted to signal calling with an emphasis on passing.  Quarterback Eddie Doherty was restricted because of a minor injury, so the drills were done with Mickey Connolly, Ed Burns and Bill Boyce doing the throwing.  This year's team is a better conditioned team than last year, with Coach Myers making that a top priority.
