“DIARY OF A WINNER”

#1 COLLEGE TEAM IN THE EAST

October 14, 1942 ... Film showed a multitude of mistakes in the Clemson game.  Badly thrown passes or passes thrown to the wrong person were picked out by Coach Myers.  Eddie Doherty is worried about his knee and fears for it every time he runs with the ball.  If Doherty is unavailable, Wally Boudreau will take his place.  Boston College quarterbacks have 66 plays from the "T" formation.  Usually only a dozen are used on a regular basis.

October 16, 1942 ...
Stranded by flooding in Virginia, the missing 20 cadets arrived in Boston shortly after midnight.  In the afternoon, the cadets only had 13 members available for practice.  Eddie Doherty has been ruled out for the game.  Two other changes for the game will have Patsy Darone at left guard and Joe Repko at right tackle.

The Eagles nip the North Carolina Navy flyers

October 17, 1942 ... At Fenway Park, the Pre-Flight powerhouse from Chapel Hill, NC, directed by former Fordham mentor, Jim Crowley and captained by Ex-Eagles Gene Goodreault and Joe Zabilski were nipped by an aggressive Eagle attack, 7-6 in one of the hardest fought games thus far.  The blocking and tackling on both sides was outstanding making this the low scoring game it was.  The Eagles scored midway on a nicely executed 45 yard pass play from Mickey Connolly to Don Currivan.  Currivan made a circus catch, stealing the ball away from two defenders.

The Eagles then went on to make three epic stands inside their 20-yard line. and protected the 7-0 lead until the final three minutes. The flyers came close to scoring in the third period when Len Eshmont rifled a shot 68 yards to Bill Krywicki, who was bound for the end zone until Don Currivan brought him down from behind on the 22-yard line.  In the final quarter the Joe Frank (Georgetown) blocked Eddie Burns' punt and John Witkowski (Fordham) recovered the ball in the end zone for their only score.  After the pre-flight lined up for the tying extra point, the Eagles defensive lineman Angelo Sist was able to rush thru and hurry Eshmont drop-kick attempt which was wide to the right, giving B.C. a great win.
