The Eagles grab an early lead and romp October 31, 1942 ... The Eagles met Georgetown and exploded for seven touchdown to gain a decisive 47-0 victory at Fenway Park. Boston College started with an innocent field goal and proceeded to stage an absolute massacre. They struck hard and they struck fast commencing the game with an 85 yard opening kickoff return by Eddie Doherty to the Hoya 8-yard line. Unable to get the ball in on three tries, the Eagles turned to Mickey Connolly who booted a 16 yard field goal on fourth down. Four plays after the next kickoff, B.C. lineman Patsy Darone intercepted a pass at the midfield stripe for B.C. Mike Holovak, Red Mangene, and Connolly combined to carry the ball down to the five. Mike Holovak drove in from this point but as he hit the line he fumbled. Fortunately, teammate Don Currivan was right there and recovered the ball in the end zone for six points. Shortly afterwards Captain Fred Naumetz recovered a Hoya fumble on their 25-yard line. This time Holovak ripped through the line for 16 yards and the sophomore, Red Mangene scooted around right end for nine yards and the touchdown. Wally Boudreau and his second string commandos took over at the beginning of the second period and continuously were at the Georgetown doorstep, but just couldn't get the ball across the goal. Hoya QB, Dornfield threw several fine passes and got off some towering punts, but when he was injured, Georgetown appeared to lose their drive and spark. In the second half Mangene, behind vicious blocking, scampered 61 yards on the opening kickoff, being brought down on Georgetown's 24-yard line. Connolly then ran around end to the four and Holovak, running behind his blocker Gil Bouley, carried it in from there in a twinkling. Mickey Connolly, who was a ball of fie all game, intercepted one of McLaughlin's long passes and brought it back 29 yards to their 45-yard stripe. He then passed to Charlie Furbush for 19 yards and Mangene ran for 18 more, before Connolly drove it over for another score. In the last period Georgetown simply cracked wide open. Bill Commane's nine yard sprint then put B.C. up 35-0. Then Manny Zissis intercepted another Hoya pass and raced it in 55 yards unmolested for one more touchdown. Finally, under the leadership of freshman quarterback Carl Lucas, the Eagles marched 49 yards culminating with a 12 yard Lucas to Dick Doherty touchdown pass for the last score. Statistically, Boston College piled up the numbers and added luster to it's #1 college football defensive rating nationally, by holding Georgetown to just 27 rushing yards and 69 yards on 40 pass attempts. Today, the explosion that fans have been waiting for happened. Mike Holovak was a one-man mob with a huge sprinkling of Mickey Connolly thrown in for good measure. The varsity played for 27 minutes and scored 27 points. The result was a horrendous slaughter. Defensively, Johnny Killea tipped three long passes out of the hands of Georgetown receivers and prevented three scores. |
