“DIARY OF A WINNER”

#1 COLLEGE TEAM IN THE EAST November 19, 1942 ... The practice session was on the light side today, with a few players nursing colds. The varsity worked against Boston University plays as performed by the second stringers. Coach Myers devoted most of the time working on defensive formations. The coach put in a lot of time to signal calling drills and ball-handling drills also. The workout was concluded with a 20 minute session of relay races. The coaches had to chase the players back to the dressing room at the end, because many wanted to stay out on the field and keep playing. |

Holovak and Mangene help
November 21, 1942 ... Mike Holovak, Carl Lucas, and Red Mangene highlighted the Eagles' offense as the conquered Boston University at dank and chilly Fenway Park. Holovak hit the Terrier line so hard that it crumbled and Mangene scored two touchdowns, out-running and out-smarting Terrier tacklers. Carl Lucas heaved two touchdown passes further highlighting his great arm. The Eagles added to their impressive stats piling up 23 first downs to B.U.'s four and gained 402 offensive yards to the Terrier 32. As so often happens, the stats don't tell the story, because the Terriers were tenacious and everything B.C. achieved, had to be earned. Boston College scored first ant the 10 minute mark when freshman Bill Boyce capped a 67-yard march by bolting over the goal line to make it 6-0. The Terriers refused to become demoralized and even when they went down 12-0 after Red Mangene bolted 59 yards for the second touchdown. Mike Holovak, who accumulated 150 yards rushing in 33 tries, added touchdown number three on a three yard burst after a 60 yard drive in the third period. The nimble Red Mangene breezed on a 41 yard dash later in the period then ran six yards for the fourth touchdown. The two final scores resulted from huge passes, one from Carl Lucas to Johnny Killea which covered 58 yards, and one to Gil Bouley for 43 yards. |
