DAVE FERRISS |
THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 2 ...
A POWERFUL RED SOX TEAM FAILS
IN THE WORLD SERIES ...
The Red Sox split a doubleheader with Detroit
May 19, 1946 ... In a pair of brilliantly pitched ball games, the Red Sox and Detroit Tigers divided a doubleheader at Briggs Stadium. Following Dave Ferriss' superb seven hit shutout,
which enabled the Sox to cop a four to nothing decision, Hal Newhouser muffled the Sox with a superlative four hit game for a 3 to 1 verdict. Three home runs cost Tex Hughson his third straight defeat on the current road trip.
As undefeated Dave Ferriss chalked up his fifth consecutive verdict, three on shutouts, as the Sox chased Dizzy Trout midway during the opening conflict on a nine hit barrage. Ferriss kept the Tigers seven hits well spaced, and for the first time this year went the distance without walking a
single opponent. He rung up a record 19 1/3 scoreless innings in succession. Only one Tiger got to third against him and that batter might have scored if Ferriss hadn't backed up third-base. Pat Mullin had lined a drive into right center to start the fifth inning and the ball got by George
Metkovich. Dom DiMaggio retrieved it as Mullin rounded second. Dom fired the ball to Bobby Doerr, who threw hurriedly to third trying to nail Mullin. The ball eluded Rip Russell but Ferriss was on the job. He recovered it before the ball could go into the Tiger dugout. Ferriss then struck
out George Kell and Birdie Tebbetts tried to squeeze in Mullin. But Ferriss was quick off the mound and Mullin never had a chance to score. Ferriss finished the inning by striking out Al Benton to preserve his scoreless streak.
Home run balls wrecked Tex Hughson in the nightcap. Hank Greenberg hit his fifth home run of the season, giving the Tigers their first run. Then Jimmy Outlaw and Dick Wakefield hit successive homers in the sixth inning to ensure Newhouser of his sixth win in seven starts.

MIKE HIGGINS |
Bobby Doerr had gone hitless 15 times in succession until he singled in the fourth inning. He should have had three hits, but a perfect bunt just rolled file in the eighth, long after Bobby had run past first base. Dave Ferriss has now gone 10 1/3 innings without being scored upon. He has
beaten the Tigers six times in seven tries. Tex Hughson has given up five home runs in his three defeats.
Mike Higgins, veteran third baseman, once again became a member of the Red Sox when the team purchased his contract from the Detroit Tigers. An announcement of Higgins acquisition was made between games of today's doubleheader with the specification that he could not play for Boston during
this three-game series. The Tigers released Higgins when they obtained George Kell from the Athletics yesterday. Higgins has 13 hits in 60 times at bat, with five RBI. |
