“DIARY OF A WINNER”

HANK GREENBERG
& TED WILLIAMS

THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO, PART 2 ...
A POWERFUL RED SOX TEAM FAILS
IN THE WORLD SERIES ...

October 2, 1946 ... The American League All Stars evened their series with the Red Sox when the cracked out a 4 to 2 victory, before another small crowd at Fenway Park.  Bolstered by the addition of Hank Greenberg, the All-Stars had a big edge over the weakened Red Sox. Besides Ted Williams, the Sox also took Dom DiMaggio out of the lineup. Dom is nursing a minor bruise on his left thumb, which is been bothering him for a week.

The All-Stars picked up their first run in the second inning off Mickey Harris, with singles by Greenberg and Stan Spence and an infield ground out. They added two more off Dave Ferriss in the sixth inning on singles by Snuffy Stirnweiss and Luke Appling, a Greenberg double, and Joe DiMaggio's line drive base hit to left.

The Sox two runs were recorded in the sixth inning. With one out, Johnny Pesky singled and Wally Moses walked. Tom McBride singled Johnny home, as Joe D. threw the ball into the All-Stars dugout, trying to nail Moses at third base and allowing him to score. These runs were made off Ed Lopat, as Dizzy Trout blanked the Red Sox during the first five innings.

The final all-star run also came against Ferriss. This came in the seventh on a pass to Cecil Travis and a resounding single by Stirnweiss.

Trout put on a good show for the fans as usual, clowning with umpire Red Jones, who played the part of the stooge with excellent grace. Regardless of the National League playoff, the series will definitely be concluded tomorrow.

Because of bad weather small crowds, owner Tom Yawkey probably will give the All-Stars a decent paycheck for their voluntary efforts in keeping the Red Sox in shape. Joe Cronin turned managing the club over to Del Baker, as he went down to New York to scout the remaining games between the Dodgers and the Cardinals.

Although the Red Sox had originally desired to open the World Series with but a single days layoff following completion of the playoff, they agreed to an extra day at the request of the National League, most likely because of the injury to Ted Williams.
