The Sox come-from-behind to win

July 9, 1955 ... The Sox overcame a four-run deficit to defeat the Orioles, 5 to 4 at Fenway Park, with Sammy White providing the punch and Tom Brewer and Ellis Kinder contributing seven innings of shutout relief.

White started the comeback and also set up the winning run against Jim Wilson in the eighth inning. The two teams had been locked in a 4-4 tie for three innings when White slammed Wilson for a lead-off triple just to the left of the flag pole. Grady Hatton, who has been hitting his best when it matters, came through again with a base hit up the middle to bring Sammy in and break the deadlock.

Kinder came in to Brewer's rescue the inning before. Brewer had relieved the starter, Ike Delock, in the second inning and pitched superbly for four innings until he succumbed to the heat. The bases were loaded and pinch hitter Hank Majeski was at bat, when Kinder took the mound. Majeski tapped easily to Billy Goodman at second base, to end the threat. Kinder shut down Baltimore in the next two innings.

The Orioles unloaded on Delock very quickly. Fred Marsh opened with a double in the first inning and took third on Bob Hale's single to left. A walk to Dave Pope filled the bases with nobody out. After getting Dave Philley on a pop fly, Delock gave up a single to Gus Triandos that scored Marsh. A second run came home when Delock hit Wayne Causey with a pitch.

Delock continued to have trouble in the second inning. Erv Palica tagged him for a leadoff double. Marsh flew out to center and Palica scampered over to third. Hale then belted a double that bounced into the Sox bullpen for a double. After a wild pitch that allowed Hale to go to third, Brewer was brought in. He hit Pope with a pitch for a bad start but Philley grounded out to score Hale with Baltimore's fourth run.

White started the Sox comeback in the second inning with a single to right. He was forced at second by Grady Hatton, but Jimmy Piersall came through with a triple near the flag pole to bring in Hatton with the Sox first run.

White started the fourth inning with another hit and Hatton drew a walk. The time Piersall hit into a doubleplay, as White moved over to third. Brewer brought him in with a single to center for the second run.

Palica, who had been staggering around, finally got knocked out in the fifth inning. With one out, he walked Williams and Jackie Jensen singled Ted to second. Palica unleashed a wild pitch that moved both runners up and was then replaced by Wilson. Norm Zauchin took a 3-1 pitch in a line to center to score Williams and Jensen, cutting the Orioles' lead to one run.

In the eighth the Orioles threatened. Marsh singled off Kinder, took third on a single by Hale and was stranded there when Kinder whiffed Gil Coan and rubbed out Philley on a pop fly.
