JACKIE JENSEN

Jackie Jensen doubles in the winning runs

August 3, 1955 ... Jackie Jensen outsmarted White Sox pitcher, Dixie Howell, with a two-run double that gave the Red Sox a 6-4 win over the league leaders. Tom Hurd's terrific hitless relief job and Jensen's clout, put the Red Sox within three games of the top of the American League.

Jensen was in a two-strike hole against Howell, with two aboard and two outs in the eight inning. The score was tied at four apiece. Jensen drove the next pitch to right center to score Billy Goodman and Ted Williams with the winning runs.

Goodman had started the inning with a single to center. Howell tried to pick him off first, but his pitch hit Billy on the back of the leg and went by Walt Dropo, just far enough to let Goodman scamper down to second. After Billy Klaus struck out and with first base open, Howell intentionally walked Ted. But Jensen ruined their strategy.

The Red Sox fell behind 1-0 when Minnie Minoso popped a homer into the left field nets in the first inning. It was the first of two for Minnie. The other came in the seventh inning and was hit into the net near the flagpole.

The Red Sox tied up the game in the second inning on Sammy White's double and and base hit by Grady Hatton. The White Sox retook the lead in the third inning on Dropo's single, a sacrifice by Jim Rivera and a single from Chico Carrasquel.

Jimmy Piersall's triple was the key hit in the fourth inning as the Red Sox took a 3-2 lead. He hit it off the bleacher wall after Hatton had walked. Mel Parnell brought Piersall home with a base hit.

The White Sox tied the game again in the sixth inning. Jim Busby singled and stole second, scoring on another hit by Carrasquel. Minoso's second homer put the White Sox up 4-3, but the Red Sox cashed in on two errors to tie the game again. Jensen had singled and went to second when the ball got by Minoso. Following a walk to Norm Zauchin, Sammy White hit a potential doubleplay roller to Nellie Fox. But Fox let the ball go right through his legs for another error that let Jensen score.

Billy Goodman ran his hitting streak up to 17 games with a single in the fourth inning. Mel Parnell pitched 6 1/3 shaky innings.
