"THERE GOES THE GREATEST HITTER
WHO EVER LIVED" ... Ted Williams

Sammy White and Jimmy Piersall thrill the crowd
in an afternoon comeback win

September 2, 1957 ... Sammy White and Jimmy Piersall hit game-tying and game-winning homers in the eighth inning of the second game of a doubleheader to give the Sox and 8-to-7 come-from-behind win. Behind the slick pitching of Frank Sullivan the Sox breezed to a 7-to-1 win in the opener.

White belted his third homer of the year into the left-centerfield nets to lead off the eight inning against reliever Bud Byerly, the third Washington pitcher of the game, to tie the score at 7-7. After pinch-hitter Willard Nixon grounded out, Piersall stepped to the plate and slammed his 16th homer into the bleachers that gave the Sox the win, 8-7. Piersall had three hits in the first game including another homer.

George Susce, the fifth pitcher for the Sox, then got Lou Berberet to hit into a force play with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, to preserve the first win of the year for Murray Wall.

This game was a sizzler. The Sox scored in the first inning on a triple by Billy Klaus and a single by Gene Stephens. They went up 4-0 in the fourth inning, on a three-run homer by Klaus.

Dave Sisler pitched no-hit ball for five innings, but wilted in the sixth inning. Jackie Jensen misjudged a fly ball, that gave Rocky Bridges a leadoff triple. Julio Becquer singled Rocky home before Sisler walked the next three batters and was replaced by Ike Delock. Singles by Roy Sievers and Berberet produced the final runs that put Washington out front, 5-4.

The Sox regained the lead in the seventh inning on two passes, a single by Jensen and a double by Dick Gernert, putting them ahead, 6-5.

Berberet then homered in the eighth, following a pass to Sievers by Murray Wall, to put the Senators back out front, 7 to 6. White tied the game with his lead-off homer in the bottom of the inning before Piersall slammed the game winner.

Jensen chalked up his 1000th career hit in the first game with a first inning single and doubled home another run off Pedro Ramos. Frank Sullivan put together his 13th complete game by pitching a six-hitter for his 12th win, 7 to 1.

Ramos was touched up for 11 of the Sox' 14 hits in his seven inning stint. He gave up the Piersall homer and one to Billy Consolo. He leads the league in homers to the opponent, with 41.

Billy Klaus was 4-for-4 in the second game and 3-for-5 in the first game. His batting average (.267) went up 19 points. Jensen knocked in three runs and leads the Sox with 88 RBIs.
