Three consecutive homers highlight the Sox
beating of the Yankees, 12-4

September 7, 1959 ... On consecutive pitches in the second inning, Don Buddin hit a three-run homer into the center field bleachers, Jerry Casale hit a home run that is still going and Pumpsie Green hit one into the bullpen. They helped to give the Red Sox a six-run inning at he expense of the New York Yankees, winning 12-4.

Jackie Jensen was the first batter in the inning and drove a ball that cleared the wall in left-center. It hit one of the uprights, that supports the nets, and bounced back on the field. Second base umpire Ed Rommel however ruled it a double, although it should have been a homer. Frank Malzone followed with a scratch single, that moved Jensen over to third and Sammy White brought him in with a base hit to right.

Then came Buddin and on a 3-2 pitch from Duke Maas, he homered into the seats in dead center, giving the Sox a 4-1 lead. Casale was the next hitter and Bob Turley came in to pitch for New York. The first pitch was a ball and on the second pitch, Casale slammed the ball over Lansdowne Street and onto the railroad tracks. Then came Green and Pumpsie waited until the count was 2-0, before blasting one into the Sox bullpen for the third consecutive four-bagger and six runs in the inning.

A walk to Hector Lopez and a triple by Gil McDougald gave the Yanks a second inning run. Casale got into more trouble in the third. Andy Carey hit for Turley and homered into the nets. Hank Bauer singled and Mickey Mantle hit a line drive that cleared the left field wall, also hit an upright and bounced back onto the field. But this one was ruled a home run. After Yogi Berra flew out, Elston Howard doubled and Casale hit Hector Lopez with a pitch. Finally, Casale stopped the bleeding by getting McDougald to ground out. He held down the Yankees after that, allowing only three more hits and didn't let a baserunner get beyond second base.

Then with one out in the seventh inning, after a double by Tony Kubek, Mike Fornieles came in to replace him and pitched two perfect innings.

In the seventh inning, leading 6 to 4, the Sox added some insurance runs. Eli Grba walked Marty Keough, Pete Runnels sacrificed him over, and Gene Stephens singled him home. Stephens stole second and with two outs, Grba walked Malzone and White to load the bases. The next batter was Buddin, and Bill Jurges brought in Vic Wertz to pinch hit for him. Wertz responded by hitting a double off the wall that cleared the bases and gave the Sox a 10-4 lead.

In the eight inning the Sox added two more runs. After Keough walked, Runnels singled and Stephens walked, against Gary Blalock. Jensen slammed a liner that got past Mantle for two more runs, giving Jackie an ever 100 RBIs for the season.
