Frank Malzone leads the Sox in a come-back win

... With one down in the
ninth-inning, Frank Malzone hit a home run to give the Red Sox a 2 to
1 victory behind Bill Monbouquette. But in the second game a squeeze
bunt gave the Detroit Tigers a 3 to 2 victory and a split of the
doubleheader.Monbouquette went the distance yielding eight hits.
Against him, Tigers pitcher Phil Regan, when all the way until Malzone broke up
the game with his home run into the net. Both pitchers waged a scoreless duel
until the seventh inning. Then Dick Brown barely cleared the left-field fence
for a home run, giving the Tigers a 1 to 0 lead.
A few minutes later Bob Tillman tied the score at one all by blasting a homer
over the netting and landing on Lansdowne Street in the seventh inning.
In the next inning, Charlie Maxwell it what looked like it could be a home
run. But out in right field Caroll Hardy, with a well-timed leap, caught the
ball with one hand. |
