"A YEAR WITH TWO
NO-HITTERS" ...
Bill Monbouquette tosses a no-hitter also
August 1, 1962
... Bill
Monbouquette pitched a no-hit game against the Chicago White Sox,
winning 1 to 0, in a duel with Early Wynn. Monbo came within one
batter of a perfect game but he walked Al Smith with two down in the
second inning.
Monbouquette
and Wynn pitched a scoreless duel until the eighth inning. With two
men out, Jim Pagliaroni and Pete Runnels both reached on base hits.
Lou Clinton knocked out his third hit of the game, a single to left
and scored Pagliaroni from second base.
In the last of
the ninth Monbouquette had to face Sherm Lollar, a pinch-hitter for
Wynn, and struck him out on three pitches. He got Nellie Fox on a
grounder to Frank Malzone at third. He then ended the game by
striking out Luis Aparicio. In all, Monboquette struck out seven
batters.
In spite of this great
performance, it was only his 9th win in 10 decisions.
He had allowed 17 runs in the 10 2/3 inning he worked in his last
four starts.
Early Wynn was
seeking his 298 career win and kept the Red Sox well in check. Until
the fifth inning, Lou Clinton was the only batter to get a hit with
singles in the second and fourth. Wynn gave up eight hits and struck
out five, passing Left Grove in the all-time strikeout list, with
2272.
When
Monbouquette walked Smith in the third inning, he struck out Jim
Landis, the next batter. Only seven balls were hit to outfielders.
Lou Clinton made the only difficult play, hauling down a long fly
ball hit by Charlie Maxwell. Clinton not only made the hard defensive
play, but had three of the eight hits made off Wynn.
