“DIARY OF A WINNER”

TIM WAKEFIELD

THE "IDIOTS" REVERSE THE CURSE
A seven run inning wins the game
for the Sox by the Bay in San Francisco

June 18, 2004 ...  It was the first meeting of the Red Sox and Giants since a legendary blunder by Fred Snodgrass of the Giants cost them the 1912 World Series. Amid an electric atmosphere on a beautiful night by the bay, the milestone game turned into a matter of survival.

With Tim Wakefield searching to regain his form, the Giants lurched to a 7-2 lead before the Sox stormed back in the fifth to seize a 9-7 advantage and go on to a 14-9 win before a sellout of 42,557 rich with Boston fans at SBC Park.

The Sox sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth as they chased San Francisco starter Jerome Williams on home runs by David Ortiz (a two-run shot) and Manny Ramirez (a solo blast), and a pair of Snodgrassesque errors before Kevin Millar slugged a three-run homer off reliever Tyler Walker to cap the rout.  The rally took Wakefield off the hook, though he allowed seven runs (five earned) over four innings to allow his ERA over his last five outings to swell to 8.73.

Millar's homer, his biggest hit of the season, was the first of the year by a Sox pinch hitter. It was the second of Millar's career and first since his grand slam last year in Milwaukee. To the relief of the Sox, Millar's latest dramatic shot just eluded the leaping Bonds and bounced off the top of the left-field wall.

The gaffes by the Giants were unusual for a team that entered the night on a 20-8 run, second best in the majors to the Yankees (20- 7). And they unfolded on a crazy but historic night when vendors hawked Sox souvenirs in the stands, the Giants distributed commemorative pins marking the meeting, and Giants fans embraced a new trend in which they wave yellow rubber chickens whenever Bonds is issued an intentional walk.

MIKE TIMLIN

A much-anticipated MRI yesterday on Schilling's injured right ankle showed no sign his condition had deteriorated, which means he will dodge a stint on the disabled list. Schilling remains on track to start Tuesday against the Twins in the opener of a six-game homestand at Fenway Park.

Byung Hyun Kim, who long-tossed in Lowell with minor league pitching coordinator Goose Gregson, will throw in the bullpen today in Pawtucket. He is expected to throw several times in the bullpen before he is activated from the DL with the PawSox in a week to 10 days.

Bill Mueller rejoined the team and was due to be evaluated by the medical staff before he begins working out with the team. He is scheduled to return to Boston with the Sox tomorrow. Mueller, who underwent surgery last month on his right knee, appears to be at least two weeks away from playing again.
