THE "IDIOTS" REVERSE THE CURSE
The Sox win a doubleheader in Baltimore
October 2, 2004 ... Terry Francona had Bronson Arroyo on a pitch count and lifted him after 45 pitches, which is what Arroyo needed
to give the Sox three scoreless innings in their 7-5 win in Game 1 of the day-night doubleheader. Arroyo allowed just one hit, a two-out double by Melvin Mora in the first, did not walk a batter, and struck out one in a tune-up for a start in either Game 3 or 4 of the Division Series.
Ellis Burks's second-inning single in the opener, in the 2,000th game of his career, may have been his last hit in the major leagues. "He's pretty sore," said Francona, who replaced Burks after two at-bats at DH with Kevin Youkilis. Orioles center fielder Larry Bigbie robbed Burks with a
diving catch when Burks came up for a second time in the second inning. |
