“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BOSTON STRONG - April 27, 2013 ... Felix Doubront helped the Red Sox past the Astros, 8-4 at Fenway Park. After a first inning that was beyond shaky, Doubront picked himself up in impressive fashion, hardly encountering a bump for the rest of the night. In that opening frame, Doubront fired 31 pitches, walked three, hit a batter and uncorked a wild pitch. The one thing he did was minimize the damage, holding the Astros to two runs while facing eight batters. When the seventh inning started, Doubront was still out there. It wound up as a quality start, as Doubront gave up four hits and three runs over 6 2/3 frames. The lefty walked four and struck out eight to improve to 3-0. The difference was simple. Doubront let his talent take over. Meanwhile, the Red Sox ran their record to 17-7, the best in the Majors. Doubront didn't ask his offense for much, but they granted his request -- and then some. The climb back took a minimal amount of time. In the second, as it was Brad Peacock's turn to lose command. Jarrod Saltalamacchia started the rally with a one-out walk. Will Middlebrooks followed by clubbing a double high off the Green Monster, and Stephen Drew walked to load the bases. Jacoby Ellsbury then lofted a two-run single into center to tie the game. Dustin Pedroia drew the third walk of the inning, and David Ortiz made it a costly one by drilling a two-run double to left to make it a 4-2 game. Ortiz delivered an insurance run in the fourth, hitting a sacrifice fly to left against lefty reliever Travis Blackley. In seven games since returning from the disabled list, Ortiz has been marvelous, hitting .519 with two homers and nine RBIs. The Sox tried to put it out of reach with three runs in the seventh, making it an 8-3 game. The key hits came from Drew (RBI single), Daniel Nava (RBI single off the Monster) and Pedroia (opposite-field RBI single to right). Daniel Bard opened the eighth by walking the only two batters he faced, throwing just one strike. Alex Wilson came on and was greeted by an RBI single to left from Matt Dominguez. Alfredo Aceves reported to Triple A Pawtucket as the Red Sox requested. Lefthanded reliever Craig Breslow pitched an inning for Pawtucket on Saturday night, facing three batters. He walked the leadoff hitter then picked him off. After a single, the next batter struck out and the runner was thrown out stealing second. Breslow threw 15 pitches, seven strikes. Lefthanded reliever Franklin Morales has been shut down because of a strained left pectoral muscle and is not expected to start throwing again until Tuesday. Morales was already on the disabled list with a back injury. Morales had his rehab assignment stopped and would seem to be at least several weeks from pitching again. Catcher Ryan Lavarnway was on the field early working on his throwing with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and bullpen coach Dana LeVangie. Lavarnway was called up and optioned after Saturday's game to make room for Lackey. |
