“DIARY OF A WINNER”

BOSTON STRONG - May 4, 2013 ... Unable to manufacture much offense, the Red Sox have lost the first two games of a series for the first time this season. Stymied by Alexi Ogando and a slew of Rangers relievers, the Red Sox suffered a 5-1 loss at Rangers' Ballpark. Through the first two games of this series, the Boston bats have managed a total of one run. John Lackey grinded through his third start of the season, throwing 98 pitches over five innings. But the righty kept his team in the game, allowing six hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out four. It was Lackey's third start back from Tommy John surgery and second outing since suffering a right biceps injury on April 4. The Sox left runners in scoring position in five innings. It made for some frustration. Since the start of the 2009 season, the Red Sox are 12-27 against the Rangers, losing all but one of seven series on the road over that span. Even with the two straight losses in Texas, the Red Sox still own the best record in the Majors at 20-10. David Ortiz has hit safely in all 12 games he has played this season. He has a 24-game hit streak dating to July 2. Ortiz's 306-day hit streak is a rarity. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it's the second-longest hit streak on the calendar of at least 20 games since at least 1900. Nomar Garciaparra had a 21-game streak from Sept. 10, 2000 to July 29, 2001. That was 322 days. Pedro Ciriaco, who plays second base, third base, and shortstop, was working on the field at first with coaches Brian Butterfield and Torey Lovullo before the game. The Sox are getting him ready in the event of an extra-inning game. The fourth annual Run-Walk To Home Base raised $1.8 million on Saturday for the clinical care of veterans and their families at Massachusetts General Hospital. The event started and ended at Fenway Park. |
