Papi's two homers pace the Sox
to a 12-5 drubbing of the Twins

David Ortiz homered twice to
set a franchise record with his 38th career multihomer game as the Red Sox
blasted the Twins, 12-5, at Target Field.
Ryan Dempster could have been the beneficiary of the Boston outburst, but he struggled with his control and couldn't get through the fifth inning. At that point, Dempster had thrown 127 pitches, and manager John Farrell had seen enough.
The Twins threatened to close the gap even further in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out. However, Craig Breslow induced Aaron Hicks to hit a pop fly to short right field. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia made a running basket catch and then fired home
to Ryan Lavarnway to nail Doumit attempting to tag up from third base, keeping the score 7-5. Craig Breslow (1-0) was credited with the win for having pitched most effectively in relief when the game was on the line.
Minnesota starter Scott Diamond fared even worse than Dempster, giving up six runs on eight hits while walking three in 4 1/3 innings. The southpaw needed 93 pitches to get those 13 outs and put the Twins in a three-run hole just four batters into the game.
David Ortiz seems to be able to do whatever he wants, especially against the Twins. After his six-RBI night, he's now hitting .332 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs in 53 career games against his former team, including .500 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 10 games
at Target Field. The Minnesota Twins released David Ortiz after the 2002 season. He was a .266 hitter over six seasons and was entering free agency. The organization thought they could do better than to spend their money on a hitter.
Shane Victorino and Stephen Drew were out of the Red Sox lineup, each with a sore back. John Farrell wants to get all of his regulars a day off in this stretch of 20 games in 20 days. Jacoby Ellsbury has played in every inning this season.
Andrew Bailey pitched an inning for Triple A Pawtucket on Saturday. He allowed a run on two hits -- one a home run -- and struck out two. He threw 14 of 17 pitches for strikes. Franklin Morales started that game and was hit hard, giving up five runs in four
innings. He gave up two home runs. It was the fourth rehab start for Morales, who has been out all season recovering from a spring training back injury. |
