The Boston Red Sox offered cash and bought Bob Johnson from Washington on
December 4, 1943. He played his next two seasons for the team that had once
employed his brother Roy. Bob played left field for the Red Sox and had a very
good year. He hit .324, and his .431 on-base percentage led the American League
and was named to the All-Star team. The Red Sox made a legitimate run for the
pennant, but when September arrived (and Bobby Doerr and a couple of others left
for military service), they slid back to fourth place, solidified by a 10-game
