FELLA GINTOFF'S GAME WINNING KICK

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
Fella Gintoff wins it
with a game ending
field goal

October 12, 1938 ... Fella Gintoff put his name on the list of immortal Boston College football heroes by kicking a 15-yard field goal in the last second of play to give the undefeated and untied Eagles a 9-6 victory over Detroit at Fenway Park.  It was preceded by a slow first half which saw Detroit get the lead on a long pass from Ed Palombo to Johnny Halpin which set up a 12 yard scoring run by Palombo to give them a 6-0 lead.

FELLA GINTOFF

It was not until midway through the final period that the Eagles started their first successful scoring drive that featured nine shots at the middle of the line by Pete Cignetti to get the ball down to the 10-yard line before he took it in for a score.  Gintoff attempted to knock the extra point through to give B.C. the lead but the Detroit defensive line swatted the kick to the ground. Then with only three minutes to play and the ball on the Boston College 23-yard line, the Eagles began a series of plays in a drive that will not be soon forgotten.  It started on fourth down when from punt formation, Gintoff threw a short pas instead to Vito Ananis who took the ball all the way through the Detroit secondary until he made it down to the Detroit 32-yard line.  Gintoff then hit a leaping Dick Harrison at the 15-yard line.  With a minute left to play, Ananis carried the ball on an end run w=for no gain, but put the ball in the middle of the field.  With 35 seconds left to play, Ralph Worth snapped the ball back to Ananis who placed it squarely on the ground allowing Gintoff to drive it through for the game winner as the gun sounded.
