FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
A tough Eagle team smears the
Fordham Rams, 56-6

November 14, 1942 ... At Fenway Park, the Boston College Eagles put on display an overwhelming merciless offensive production and crushed Fordham by a lopsided score of 56-6.  As monumental as the score was, it was the second worst beating that Fordham has ever experienced in the school's gridiron history. The display raised the Eagles to the status of being the #1 team in the National Rankings, a recognition they well deserved.  Their aerial attack was devastating and on the ground the fleet-footed backs drove through huge holes, leaving the Ram defenders hopeless.

The first period saw the Eagles get into a hole on the end of their initial 69 yard march when they fumbled on their own 30-yd line.  They then had a touchdown taken away from them via a pass interception on the Fordham goal line. After battling out of this predicament they were held scoreless until Gil Bouley blocked a punt that Fordham let bounce through the back of their end zone to give B.C. an automatic safety.

The Eagles rose up powerfully and tallied three times in the second period to settle in with a 22-0 halftime lead.  The scoring came on a 39 yard pass from Mickey Connolly to Don Currivan who traveled all the way behind the excellent downfield blocking of Charlie Furbush to the Fordham 13-yd line.  On four plays Mike Holovak moved the ball to the 6-yd line where  Mickey Connolly ran into the end zone behind the blocking of Joe Repko. The two other touchdowns by Red Mangene and Mike Holovak followed in rapid succession.  The second on a 49 yard drive in which Mangene carried twice for two 18 yard runs, before Holovak drove it in from the 1-yard line.  Then Connolly intercepted a pass and ran it down to Fordham's 47.  13 yards by Furbush and 18 by Mangene brought the ball to the 2-yard line, allowing Connolly to push it across for the score.

DON CURRIVAN

In the third quarter, agile Ed Doherty snuck through the line and twisted and turned his way to pay dirt on a nice 34 yard run to highlight a 79 yard drive.  Connolly hit Don Currivan on a nifty 55 yard pass play.  Then Connolly made a double fake to the right and hit Currivan streaking down the opposite side in stride, running away from two enemy defenders.  Still in the third period, the Eagles put another drive together of 73 yards.  From 34 yards away, Eddie Doherty playing quarterback, called his own number and ran the distance on a sneak.

In the 46 minutes the varsity played, they put up 36 points so at that point the fracas was turned over to Wally Boudreau and his hustling contingent who wasted no time in breaking into the scoring column.  On the very first play, on his own 48-yard line, Bill Boyce hit Johnny Killea sprinting down the left side at the 22 yd line and Killea sprinted the rest for another  touchdown.

In the last period, the Boudreau clan collected two more tallies.  The first was the culmination of a 61 yard drive in seven rushes.  Commane knocked out 23 yards in two carries and Killea broke for 27 yards with three carries, before Commane put the points on the scoreboard.  The final score came when Bernie Lanoue shot through tackle for a score in one 20 yard run, set up by Boudreau's beautiful 72 yard punt return.

Fordham's only touchdown came on a 53 yard bomb into a gale by Harry Squatrito.  His receiver, Frank Malinowski was well covered by two Eagle defenders, but turned around and ran back ahead of them toward the ball held up by the wind.  He caught it and threaded his way 26 yards thru the B.C. defenders into the end zone.  At the end of the game Fordham coach Earl Walsh summed it up with one sentence "You can't tackle what you don't see"
