“FOOTBALL AT FENWAY”

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
A real punch wins it for Boston College, 13-3

November 20, 1920 ... Boston College triumphed over Marietta College at Fenway Park  with old-fashioned line plunging football.  The Ohioans opened up the game with a dazzling assortment of plays and within three minutes took the lead via a dropkick from their quarterback, Whiting.  They were never at threat again, until the last period when, as they were driving for a score, had their drive thwarted by B.C.'s Jack Heaphy with a pass interception.

In doing so, B.C. handed Marietta their first defeat in two seasons and kept their own undefeated record intact.  With the score tied after the first period in an exchange of field goals, the Eagles drove for a touchdown.  Starting on the Marietta 40-yd line, they pushing downfield until Jim Liston was able to smash through the line, twisted and squirmed out of the arms of three Marietta defenders, and then side-stepped two more men for a great touchdown run.  The fourth quarter saw both teams jockeying back and forth, the Eagles running the ball and Marietta throwing passes.  Finally time ran out and B.C. had survived an epic match of two different philosophies on offensive strategy.  On this day a hard grinding ground game topped a sharp passing game.
