OSMANSKI'S FINAL TOUCHDOWN

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
Osmanski and Cahill lead Holy Cross
to B.C.'s only loss of the season

November 26, 1938 ... The Holy Cross Crusaders ended Boston College's undefeated season by roaring to a touchdown in every period and a convincing 29-7 victory at Fenway Park.  Holy Cross' spectacular offense staged scoring drives of 73, 49, 46 and 30 yards. Except for a temporary offensive threat in the opening minutes of play and a glamorous moment at the start of the second half, when their lone touchdown was scored on a 14 yard pass from Charlie O'Rourke to Alex Lukachik, the Eagles were outplayed in every department.

The Crusader's first touchdown was scored in spectacular fashion at the end of a 73-yard march which began in the fourth minute of play from their own 27-yard line.  A long pass from Ronnie Cahill and a 15 yard penalty gave them a first down.  The Eagles held them at the 10-yard line until fourth down, when Cahill threw a pass into the right corner of the end zone and Andy Giardi grabbed it for the score just before he went out-of-bounds.

Bill Osmanski and Hilary Renz led a 49-yard scoring drive for their second score.  Osmanski ran 21 yards on a reverse to move the ball to the 3-yd line. On fourth down Osmanski flipped the ball back to Henry Ouelette who swept around left end for the second touchdown.

The third Holy Cross touchdown was scored by Johnny Kelley, who took a lateral from Osmanski who had rushed for eight yards, tossed the ball back to Kelley who then raced 46 yards down the sidelines.  Late in the third period, the purple scored two points on a safety when a bad snap from Eagle center, Leo Logue, bounded out of the back of the B.C. end zone, making it 23-7.  The final Crusader score came on the second to last play of the game.  The drive started from the Eagle 30-yd line.  Two passes from Cahill gave them a first down at the four.  Osmanski hit the line twice and scored on the second chance, his last play of his college career.

Boston College's touchdown came at the end of a 51-yard march.  A pass from O'Rourke to Gene Goodreault moved the team to the Holy Cross 35-yard line. and a few plays later a penalty placed the ball on the fourteen.  On fourth down, O'Rourke hit Lukachik at the five yard who ran it in for the score.  At that point the Eagles were still in the game, only behind 14-7.  So convincingly did the Crusader smash the Eagles that even between scores, their defense harassed the Eagles offense.  Holy Cross rushed 217 yards to B.C's 41 and passed for 85 yards to B.C.'s 40
