FELLA GINTOFF SCORES

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
B.C. comes back
against Holy Cross

November 28, 1936 ... Boston College marched with confidence and conviction to one of the most gratifying victories in their school's history, against Holy Cross at a frigid Fenway Park.  Overcoming a 12-0 deficit to score two touchdowns and win 13-12, the Eagles triumphed over the elements and their traditional foe with Fella Gintoff crashing over his right guard for the all important final score in the final minutes of the contest.  Together with a 56 yard second period advance and Tony DiNatale's extra point, they served to obliterate the early Crusader lead.  Spotting the boys from Worcester a touchdown gained by means of a pass to Rex Kidd in the end zone and another in which Crusader tackles, Moncewicz and Gavin collaborated in blocking a kick and transforming it into a touchdown, the Eagles fought back with unrestrained vigor to completely outplay Holy Cross and ultimately gain the coveted victory.  Gintoff scored both Eagle touchdowns on plunge plays, climaxing dramatic marches through the demoralized purple defense.

Holy Cross received the opening kickoff and waltzed 45 yards down the field in four plays only to stall. On B.C. first play from scrimmage Horsfall fumbled the ball away, allowing Holy Cross to take possession at the Eagle 25-yd line.  Two pass plays from Paul Bartolomeo to Rex Kidd resulted in the first score.  Following the kickoff, B.C. ran three times before having to punt.  Crusader tackle Fred Moncewicz blocked the punt cleanly going right over center at the B.C. 38-yd line.  Both he and Jim Gavin chased after the ball with Gavin picking it up at the 21-yard line and raced into the end zone.  John Janusas got a hand on both of Kidd's failed PAT attempts - a small thing that proved huge in the end.

TONY DiNATALE

For the next 55 minutes, the Boston College offense took over the game.  In the second period after Holy Cross lost the ball on downs at their 25, B.C. rallied.  The hammered down the field to the Holy Cross 12-yd line thanks in part to the running of Tony DiNatale.  At the point Holy Cross grabbed a pass interception and had the ball back, but at their own 10-yd line.  B.C. held them and received the ball back at their own 44-yard line after a great punt.  DiNatale took his team across in nine plays.  He carried it first to the Holy Cross 44 with a great spinning move.  Runs by Fella Gintoff and Tom Guinea brought the ball down to the 27.  On fourth down Gintoff hit Danny McFadden among the snow flakes down the middle to the two yard line allowing Gintoff to carry it in on the next play.

The second half gave neither team an advantage with DiNatale and Dougherty sending punts back and forth.  In the final period, Kidd started from his 44-yard line and threw a pass after trying to scramble away from B.C.'s John Janusas.  The pass went right into the arms of McFadden for an interception.  B.C. went after the touchdown like a band of starved bandits at this point.  Gintoff hit Ferdenzi at the 32-yd line and DiNatale ran it to the 25.  On fourth down Gintoff rumbled through to the 21 for a first down. Holy Cross forced another fourth down situation and on this play Gintoff, seeing all his receivers covered, ran it down himself to the Crusader nine.  The give was to DiNatale on the next play and he made it down to the one foot line.  Gintoff took the ball and shoved over right guard for the winning score.  At this point there was still five minutes left to play.  The B.C. defense allowed Holy Cross nothing after the kickoff.  B.C. got the ball back and simply just ran out the clock to end the game.
