“FOOTBALL AT FENWAY”

MAZNICKI'S GAME WINNING PAT

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
The rallying Eagles nose out
the Crusaders on a late score, 14-13

November 29, 1941 ... This game was a great one for Coach Denny Myers as his Eagles rose up from the Fenway turf to topple Holy Cross in the closing minutes of a great game.  The Crusaders took the opening kickoff on a sustained drive, that climaxed at the five minute mark with a score by the great Bill Osmanski's worthy replacement, Johnny Grigas, who rushed for 103 yards in the game.  Grigas took the ball 17 yards on the first offensive play of the game, and later drove outside on a four yard scoring smash.

Now trailing 7-0, six minutes later, the Eagles' initial scoring effort was sparked by Frank Maznicki, whose broken field running moved the ball down to the Cross' 25-yard line.  Maznicki then amazed the crowd by throwing for the first time in his career, hitting Ed Zabilski with a strike only five yards from the goal.  In one blast over right guard, Maznicki took it end the end zone for the TD.  He the added the game tying extra point.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles fumbled at their own 34-yard line.  Grigas ran the ball around end for nine yards, and five plays later he took it in for the go ahead score. Maznicki, who was doing everything, rocketed over the line to block Robert's extra point.  With the Eagles down 13-7, and the clocked showing three minutes left to go, Eddie Doherty took a Crusader punt to midfield.  Maznicki then passed for twenty yards, and on the next play, Teddy Williams raced to victory on a naked reverse as Eddie Doherty headed toward the right side and handed off to Williams, coming the other way.  He maneuvered in full stride to avoid the charging defenders and ran it in.  The, as the clock ticked away, the great Maznicki converted the game winning extra point, which incidentally was his eighth point of the game.  The "Monk" was a man among men today as he ended an illustrious career at Boston College.
