“FOOTBALL AT FENWAY”

CAPT ERNIE SCHWOTZER

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
The Eagles smear the Crusaders' attack

December 2, 1939 ... Rain threatened all day and a deep fog hung over Fenway Park and 40,000 fans hung in to see one of the best games of the season.  The outstanding plays were numerous in this 14-0 victory.  Pete Cignetti achieved the first of two scores splitting Holy Cross' left tackle for three yards and the first score after 45 minutes of scoreless play.  It climaxed a 53 yard march whose feature was a miracle pitch of a slick and treacherous football by Charlie O'Rourke and an equally superlative catch by Vito Ananis.  The play gained 33 of the most important yards of the day, with Ananis sprawling out to make a circus catch of a ball at the 7-yd line, tipped by the Crusader's Ronnie Cahill.

The second touchdown was by B.C. captain Ernie Schwotzer, seven minutes later, who flung himself into the line of flight of a Cahill fourth down punt.  The ball bounded back into the Holy Cross end zone and Schwotzer's momentum carried him right to that spot were he pounced on the ball for a score.  These were the descriptions of the scoring, but were by no means the highlights of the game.

One highlight was spawned by Gene Goodreault, the Boston College right end.  It came on the Holy Cross kickoff starting the second half.  Charlie O'Rourke caught the kick and dropped it.  Goodreault saw that O'Rourke was about to try and pick it up and run it out of the end zone and wouldn't make it because a horde of Crusaders were bearing down on him.  Goodreault tackled his teammate in the end zone for a touchback, and B.C. started at the 20-yard line.  Holy Cross had their great plays turning back B.C. with pass interceptions by Malinowski, Cahill and Saba, all in the first period. Titus snared an O'Rourke pass near the end of the first half and galloped 57 yards before he was brought down just short of the goal line.  Credit B.C.'s defense because none of these turnovers resulted in Holy Cross scoring.
