FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
The Boston Bears beat down
the Yankees at Fenway

October 13, 1940 ... The Boston Bears garnered their second victory over New York at Fenway Park.  Dartmouth's Bill Hutchinson got off a number of great runs, hit two tremendous punts and combined with Harland Gustafson on a 29-yard pass that gave his New York Yankees football team their only touchdown.  His teammates were not up to the standards that he set however.  The Bears were the superior team all the way and they had a couple of stars of their own.  Morrie Kohler picked up 81 of the 163 rushing yards, and Andy Karpus put on a phenomenal display of pinpoint passing, completing 6 of the 11 he tried for 130 yards.

Karpus and Keith Ranspot started the game by partnering up on a 36 yard pass to score the game's first touchdown.  A pass from Fran Patrick to Holy Cross' former star, Joe Yablonski put the Bears in the lead for good during the third period.  Kohler and Karpus accounted for two more touchdowns.  Kohler whizzing over from 14 yards out and Karpus plunging from the 4-yd line, five minutes before the end of the game.  The first score came in the first period 10 minutes after the start, with the Bears starting on the New York 36-yard line after a punt.  On first down Karpus faded back and hit Ranspot at the 20 who scored unmolested.

The New York touchdown resulted from a 79-yard march fashioned almost solely on Hutchinson's passing and running.  Hutch moved the ball down to the Bear 29 and the connected with Gustafson who leaped over two defenders at the two yard line and came down with the ball for the score.

The Bears started again in the third quarter from the Yankee 45.  A Wheeler to Ranspot pass was good for a first down at the 30-yd line.  Frank Patrick then hit Yablonski at the 15.  Patrick avoided the Yank's Vinnie Albanese and carried it in for the score.  Before the period ended, the Bars marched down from the Yankee 49 to score in five plays/  Kohler providing the payoff when he streaked through a hole at left tackle and score untouched.  In the fourth period, Kohler intercepted Hutchinson and ran the steal down to the Yankee 22-yd line.  Thell Fisher moved the ball to the four, where Karpus plowed through the line for the final score of the day.
