“FOOTBALL AT FENWAY”

GARY FAMIGLIETTI SCORES A TOUCHDOWN

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
B.U. marches through Lehigh
for a convincing victory

October 2, 1937 ... A power-house Boston University football team blasted its way to a pair of first period touchdowns with the greatest of ease and then coasted to a 33-56 victory over Lehigh in their season opener at Fenway Park.  Slicing inside and outside tackle and pounding through center, what shaped up as maybe the best of Pat Hanley's four B.U. teams paraded 65 yards in 11 plays for its initial score.  A few moments later, they then took the ball and went 44 yards in seven plays for a second touchdown.  They then threw two passes and made an interception to account for their other scores. Lehigh managed to score in the third period by covering 78 yards in nine plays.  One of their tackles gained 17 yards and a guard added the final 41 in plays that highlighted well-executed laterals.

Boston University put the opening kick-off in play on its own 35-yard line. and then walked down the field for a touchdown.  Lou Blazynski combined with Gary Famiglietti in carrying the ball down field, with Famiglietti pushing the ball through from four yards out.  A 20-yard return of a Lehigh punt by Saul Nechtem started the Terrier's second drive.  Nechtem then took the ball 18 yards off tackle, followed by a four yard drive over left tackle for the touchdown by Blazynski.  The rest of the half found the Terriers thrusting deep into Lehigh territory but failing to score.

In the third period Blazynski pulled down a pass on his own 45 and raced down to the Lehigh 21-yd line.  Nechtem then passed to Blazynski, who tucked the ball on the enemy eight and marched in untouched for the next Terrier points.  On the next series Lehigh marched down for their only score of the game.  Tackle Myron Sterngold picked up 17 yards on a tackle eligible reverse that put Lehigh in B.U. territory for the first time in the game.  On the next play, Fred Bayer, the Lehigh left guard pulled as if he was leading interference, but was tossed a lateral and scored after a 41-yard run.

Early in the final period Blazynski came up big again, intercepting a Lehigh pass on their 28-yd line and romped in for another score.  Finally, with about two minutes left, Earl Compton hit Nechtem.  Saul grabbed the ball at the Lehigh 40 and outsped the Lehigh secondary for a net gain of 62 yards and the final touchdown.
