FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
Boston University edges Colgate in the driving rain

October 8, 1948 ... A glue fingered sophomore end and accurate place-kicking, as well as a flagrant pass interference, combined to give Boston University a thrilling 14-13 comeback victory at muddy Fenway Park.  Two times B.U. spotted Colgate a touchdown lead and came roaring back to even the count and then go ahead.  The margin of victory proved to be the two extra points booted by Everett Dorr.

Colgate started off as if they intended to push the Terriers right off the field.  They marched 47 yards after the opening kickoff, but were stopped.  But the next time they had possession, they score to give them a 7-0 lead.  Late in the first quarter, Bill Tighe found George Sulima, who pulled the ball away from a defender and raced down the sideline to Colgate's 35-yd line.  That played proved to be a park for B.U. With that impetus, in the second period, Sulima again grabbed a pass, this one from Johnny Toner and eluded three defenders to tie the score 7-7.

In the second half, with the rain pelting down, Colgate marched 85 yards to take a 13-7 lead in five plays.  Ted McLaughlin's extra point went wide, proving eventually to be the difference in the game.  B.U. came right back after the following kickoff to tie the game again.  On fourth down with the Terriers knocking at Colgate's 11-yd line, Toner passed to George Winkler.  Pass interference on Colgate defender Rhys Roberts gave B.U. the ball on the 1-yd line.  Two plays later, Sylvio Cella bucked over for the tying tally, with Ev Dorr splitting the uprights for the game winner.
