FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
Larry Kirkman sparks Boston University to a 28-7 victory over N.Y.U.

October 22, 1948 ... Boston U. defeated N.Y.U at Fenway Park but for three periods the fans there probably wished they had stayed home. In the first period, Pat Giordano recovered an N.Y.U. fumble at their 43-yard line to setup B.U.'s first score.  It seemed to look like the Terriers were now on their way, but a penalty on New York's next possession opened the field up for them to tie the game at 7-7.  More sloppiness killed off another B.U. threat in the second period, but Bobby Whelan ran back a punt from his own 22-yard line to New York's 42 just before the half.  Giordano then broke thought to the N.Y.U. 32-yd line.  Toner dropped a pass to Sulima at the eight yard line, followed by Bob Boucher outrunning everyone around right end for the score before the half and a 14-7 halftime lead for the Terriers.

The sophomore studded team sputtered all over the field in the second half, until one of the upperclassmen, Larry Kirkman burst around the right side for 10 yards and then around the left side for 43 yards and a touchdown in the final period.  N.Y.U. must have been rattled, because a minute later, their center snapped the ball into the wide open on fourth down.  B.U. took over on the N.Y.U. 42-yard line and the start of another scoring drive.  Johnny Toner pitched to Bobby Whalen who completed a long pass to George Sulima at the 10-yd line.  When then slipped around right end for the final score.
