TOM SHERMAN PASSES TO GINO CAPPELLETTI

FOOTBALL AT FENWAY
The Pats explode and
beat the Bengals

December 1, 1968 ... The Patriots blitzed the Bengals today and they couldn't move across midfield until the very end of the first half, but it was too late, because the Pats had exploded and were on their way with a 26-0 lead.  Tom Sherman fired three touchdown passes and Jim Nance accounted for another in the rout.  Nance had one of his best games rushing for 80 yards and had a 60 yard dash called back.

The game started when Houston Antwine dropped Paul Robinson in the end zone for a safety.  The Bengals made another mistake in the second period when they had 12 men on the field, giving Gino Cappelletti a second chance on a field goal he had missed.  The second try was good from 27 yards out.

Two plays later, Jim Cheyunski made a diving pass interception at the Cinci 43-yard line and returned it 22 yards, giving Pats the ball back.  Sherman hit Jim Whalen on the first of two touchdown receptions. making it 12-0.  Cappy got a chance to get in the act by nailing an 18 yard touchdown pass down the middle to make it 19-0.  Next, rookie Cinci punter Rex Keeling muffed the snap from center, giving the Pats good field position and setting up the next score for Jim Nance to make it 26-0 at the half.

The Bengals who were only able to muster two first downs in the first half, got moving in the third period when John Stofa led them 80 yards and finally hit Estes Banks for their first points.  The Pats came right back with a drive of their own, capped by Sherman's second touchdown toss to Whalen.  With the game coming to a close, Stofa hit Rod Sherman for the last score of the day.
